Game Boy Advance

Episode 250: Fire Emblem The Sacred Stones

Do you know those people who get grumpy if they don’t get their coffee in the morning? Well, some nations get grumpy if they don’t have all the magical stones that keep the realm in balance in the morning. What can you do to protect your home from such invading neighbors after they mysteriously lose all sense of reason, promote a bunch of jerks to hunt after you, and engage in a guerilla war with your brother? The only way to find out is to listen!

Episode 227: Castlevania Circle of the Moon

Nothing says "dark age fun times" like resurrecting the legendary Lord of Darkness and draining the life from an old man! Plus, the guest of honor is sure to enjoy the pre-meal entertainment: two teens aimlessly wandering the remains of his old castle. One of them seems to be particularly plucky. Follow Nathan "Definitely-Not-A-Belmont" Graves through traps and travails with us as we dive into the first mobile Castlevania!

Episode 213: Pocky and Rocky with Becky

Ever wonder what ancient tanuki got up to?  Apparently, the answer is "hang out with adorable priestesses and learn shinto demon banishing techniques".  Also, destroy a lot of paper in pursuit of those two hobbies.  Thankfully, this game is true enough to its cutesy aesthetic that things never get to rocky, so you could probably be nomming some pocky while you're playing.  Also, something about Becky.

Episode 198: The More Missiles Upgrade Gives You More Missiles [Metroid Zero Mission]

Samus is back!  To celebrate that (though mostly because of this month's theme), we're revisiting the first real Metroid remake: Zero Mission.  The team learned a bunch of things from Super Metroid and haphazardly applied them to the original game.  What results is an odd, but relatively solid, of bad map design and progression and reasonable controls.  Fun!

Ah, my powerups - again!  Better download some more lasers.

Episode 196: Why Do You Keep Hitting Yourself? [Final Fantasy 2]

Finally, the ultimate entry in an unfortunately truncated series!  Oh, nevermind.  There are apparently, like, 20 more of these floating about.  Oh, well.  Join a team of beleaguered youths fighting against a dystopian empire in order to save their ragtag rebellion, which is conveniently based out of well-known and well-funded country of sympathizers.  This time, your stats are directly affected by your actions, so that sets it apart a bit from other entries in the series.  Grinding has rarely been so entertaining!

Episode 189: I Wish This Was FF6 [Golden Sun]

When the world needs a hero, it looks to the JRPG protagonist: stolid, inoffensive, generally teenaged.  Throw in some magic spirits that can be swapped during combat to summon giant monsters, and a sprawling overworld, and you've got yourself a solid game.  Will Isaac save the world?  Will our narrators quit out of boredom before that happens?

Of course, the big guy makes melee guns hit harder, what else would he do?  And that guy constantly making verbal snipes?  He's also adept at making physical snipes... transitively through his units.  Obviously.  Enter the world of wars that seem to be progressing, or maybe proceeding.  On the square grid of conflict, only one quirky character can triumph!

Episode 132: Pokémon WIZARD [Pokémon Pinball RS]

Somehow... it has taken us over 130 episodes to finally play a pinball game.  Perhaps more surprising is that this is only our third Pokémon game.  On a vaguely related note, everyone I know pronounces it "Pókemon", but we were all kids who didn't understand accents at the time.  At any rate, we're going to loop our way through hatching, catching, evolving... Really, everything in this game comes down to shooting 1 of 4 loops.  Also, occasionally annoying a Pelipper enough to cause it to eat you.
