Episode 292: Neverwinter Nights 2

Hey, remember when we used to do Last Time on Video Games? We thought, since its winter, and none of us our in a D&D campaign, it might be novel to do that again! So we played Neverwinter Nights 2. Is D&D better without a Dungeon Master? Does 3.5 hold up as a system? Is Last Time on Video Games still a podcast? The answer to these questions and more are contained within!

Episode 262: Earthbound

Life is strange. One day you’re just a normal kid, going to school, and the next, you’re the chosen one using your psychic powers to defeat an unknowable Lovecraftian being with friends you never met while your annoying neighbor kid is stealing your helicopter. And before you know it, you’re a robot fighting bionic krakens just to get a cool baseball bat. And then you’re listening to a podcast about Earthbound.

Episode 179: Philosophical Zombies [Planescape: Torment]

Necromancers get all the cool toys: automatic corpses, snarky skulls, cool cloaks.  Therefore, you should show them what's up by talking your way around having to deal with them directly!  Hitting them with your big metal stick is also an option, but that's way less interesting.  Step into the world(s) of Planescape and try to recover your lost soul!

When you download, you just wake up in the mausoleum again.

Episode 139: Phantom Train of the Opera [Final Fantasy 6]

Rivaling our list of SNES classics enters another great contender. Complete with drama, 2D fighting inputs, and a huge cast, this game is sure to rock the (air) boat. Just don't forget to let Cid fix ya up.

(02:00) Need to tie Earthbound to Undertale?  Here's some (potentially lacking) evidence!

(09:30) Finish your tweet.  Many meme.

(11:00) Fire Emblem: Fates didn't quite deliver the complex story telling Zach expected.

(21:00) Game whales!  Opera!  Train suplexing!  Octopi?

(25:00) Not without its flaws: the shambling opening, party configuration, awkward mechanics moments.

(47:00) History lesson about swords.

Episode 128: A Long Time Ago On the XBox [Knights of the Old Republic]

Journey back to a galaxy far, far away, and even further back in time than normal. Here, we can find the Jedi derping about as usual, and the Sith (who are apparently a whole species) just stepping in to muck things up. Will our plucky hero and their band of misfits be able to stop the impending Sith invasion? At least the lightsaber noises are cool.

Episode 118: Dumb Quest For Babies [Final Fantasy Mystic Quest]

The most mystic thing about this game might be how you manage to carry 40 sets of armor and weapons on you without collapsing.  Link does that all the time, though, so I guess it's fine.  Join us to do the most absolutely generic questing because crystals n' stuff.  Also, some archfiends or something?  *yawn*  I'm gonna go throw bombs at the skeleton.

You know what screams classic SNES era RPGs?  Dragon Ball Z!  Oh, also one of the best RPGs ever, too.  I feel like Chrono should speak up for himself more often, though.  Why does he have a katana?  Seriously?  Oh, well, it's pretty sweet anyway.

In the year 1999, this download would have taken about 4 hours... in the future!

Nintendo's lesser known child, Fire Emblem, and its first appearance on our podcast!  Sword some guys, ax some lances, shoot fireballs.  This game's got it all... except telling you how to talk to other people.  I suppose, though, that's a life skill that no game has taught.

This Killer Download has a 35% chance of being critically awesome.

Show Notes

(08:40) Norse mythology is weird!  Also, ShinTen.

(11:30) Bravely vampire!

(16:00) That thing with a 'C' that's Fallen London currency is Cryptic Clue.  Yes, clues and secrets are currency.  As is a Tale of Terror.  This game is weird.

(20:00) Sunless Sea looks pretty good.

(22:00) Fire Emblem is fun, guys!  We attempt to dissect why the combat in this is fun.  We also talk about the general mechanics and how the story (which is "good") is mostly just a frame for some fantasy tactics time.

(29:00) Lyn is a Disney Princess!

Get your power armor ready and pop some Rad-X, because we're exploring a post-nuclear wasteland at the start of a pretty cool series that doesn't afraid of rad scorpions.

Our download appears to be... glowing.

(05:00) Glorious Japerica!

(09:00) For those who don't remember the law.

(10:45) Tyler couldn't remember who the hell this guy was.  Kevin?

(15:00) Smogon's got a new tier!  For the record, Mega Beedrill looks awesome.

(19:00) He went outside the country to be even more awesome: Gary Oak, Pokeprodigy.

(28:00) Best Sm4sh character metrics include "How much does getting hit by this one sound like a truck?".

(30:00) Gihren's Greed continues to sound amazing.  The Penelope looks super impractical.

(40:00) Drunken Robot Pornography is as awesome as the name sounds.

(42:00) American traditions: brought to you by disproportionate numbers of children.

(50:30) Cut scene faces!

Episode 75: Actual Hell [Kid Icarus]

Apparently goddesses need rescuing, and Pit's the only cherub man enough to do it.  Unfortunately, he hasn't been taking his vitamins, so he gets beaten up really easily.  Also, he can't fly.  Also, Death is trying to kill him, sometimes from multiple bodies at once.  At least you centurion friends are only locked up in minimum security.

Turns out you can just walk across the other side of the screen to find the download.

Show Notes

(05:30) Upcoming (bad) superhero TV shows.

(11:30) We talk about Payday 2 for a bit.  Moral: it's a really fun co-op game.

(14:30) Fire Emblem Awakening continues to be good, but could have been better.  Awesome leveling may cause the end game to be too easy.

(23:15) Ice Climbers: It's kinda boring!

(24:30) Palutena's intro is borderline creepy.  That's, alright, though, because Robin's awesome.

(29:00) This game has a super high difficulty cliff, but an equally steep downslope.

(32:00) You can totally Pac Man your way to the other side of the screen in this.

(39:00) Fortresses are actually pretty fun.  And nutritious.

(40:20) Thieves.  They suck.

Episode 72: Beating Up Wizards For Lunch Money [Final Fantasy II]

Hark, and listen, for I shall tall ye a fantastic tale. You see, long ago, in the land of Baron, the king was a dick. Also, there was this guy who commanded their sweet airship force who was less of a dick, then redeemed himself. There were some other people, too, who could throw fireballs and stuff, but it's mostly about airship dude. He had great hair!

Our download might cost all your MP... and your life.

(01:00) Pretty Guardian Iron Man.

(02:00) Payday 2!

(07:30) League tales.

(12:30) Pretty Guardian Sailor... Those eyes...

(15:30) Final Fantasy: subtitles.

(18:40) Now you, too, can watch text walls!

(23:00) The intro isn't super interesting, largely due to lack of variety in combat.

(30:00) Rydia!

(31:00) Interesting mechanics: ranged weapon ammunition, hand preference, row assignments.

(33:00) As a side note, the DS intro makes this game look much better.

(36:00) The Antlion.  This thing.  Signposting problems.

(39:00) Lack of descriptions on items and rotation characters make progress somewhat lackluster.  Not to mention there's some overlap between characters.

Episode 44: The Secret is Killing Things [Secret of Mana]

Considered to be one of the greatest SNES games ever, this week we're tackling the story of a hero who must save the world... for Reasons!  Grab a ton of different, but mechanically similar, weapons and bash some baddies to victory!

The real secret is the download!

(05:00) Synchro Summoning makes no sense.  Geremy talks Hearthstone for a bit.

(09:00) Stupid electric gloves.  Also, creepy girl!

(15:00) The wonders of Zach's new computer.  It makes Ghosts want to die!

(18:30) Despite lukewarm critical response, MechWarrior Online sounds pretty good.

(21:30) Somehow, people took Tyler's standard screenname in the login engine for Sins of a Solar Empire: Rebellion, which is a pretty fun game.

(22:30) Secret of Mana trivia!  Related to Enix, if you want to start a journey into madness, start here.

(27:30) You pulled the sword, so now you're the guy.

(33:30) Santa manages to beat Darkseid every year.

(38:30) Is the menu noise of the Wii annoying?  Let us know!  Also, we talk about the novelty of key mapping.

(44:00) Magic!  The ring menu is interesting, but not a great idea.

(51:00) Final thoughts: probably skip this one.

Episode 39: Pirates are Cool, Oh My God [Uncharted Waters: New Horizons]

After a "totally planned we swear" hiatus, we're back with what might be one of the most awesome games about sailing and pirates ever. Also, there are assassins. It's also not the one you're thinking of. This week, we trade, steal, and sail our way to world domination with a remarkably accurate map of the 1520s!

Downloading now decreases the overall price of downloads in this country, allowing you to sell them for more in Turkey!

(01:00) Giant turkeys and ice worlds.  Also, adorable.

(02:30) All the stuff we've been playing.  Zach's playing LoL now, so officially everyone in the world is.

(07:10) Dat noise.  You seriously had to listen to this every time.

(08:30) Did someone say pirates?

(13:00) On a tangent, a game about a time traveling thief musician.

(14:30) Shanties!

(16:20) We talk (read complain) about game pacing.  Arkham Asylum allows you to look around and stuff during the opening scene.

(26:00) New Horizons' cutscene problems: early 16-bit sprites moving around randomly is not entertaining.

(28:00) This game has 6 discrete scenarios.  Like some other game by the same company.

(30:00)  Go get famous.  Discover the dodo.  Attack everyone!  Sell stuff and invest in cities!  There are a ton of different ships.  Sail the entire known world.  Just skim this really quick to get an idea of the scope.

(35:00) You will likely end up with multiple food ships, like the Food, the More Food, the Pantry, or the Fridge.

(36:00) Naval combat is broadside, but you don't really have much control over what happens.  Your team just kinda mills around.  You can also duel people.  Fun.

(42:00) Crew is expensive.  It's like they eat or something.

(43:00) This game as a sweet mercantile system.  You can affect the price index of items in a port so you can buy stuff for cheap after selling a ton of similar goods there, then take the more expensive items to ports with higher price indices.  It's objectively great

(50:00) Like sea-faring exploration and being a merchant?  Play this!

Episode 31: Menu Battle 64 [Ogre Battle 64]

Team, assemble!  You hit him with that thing you always do, and I'll flip a coin to determine which spell to cast!  Afterwards, we can walk through town and, if they think exactly like us, we'll free them!

This week, it's Ogre Battle 64, the game of tactics and valor on the battlefield.  Join us as we find out just how many soldiers it takes to get to the center of a fighter!

Is your alignment right to Liberate or Capture our download?

(00:55) Games and us.  Specifically, ones with which we've interacted lately.  DoA is a game about... fighting.  Seriously, though, it's got a pretty decent story and gameplay.  The 3D fighter with combat damage we mentioned was apparently Tao Feng: Fist of the Lotus.  If you're in the market for used... anything, 2nd and Charles is pretty awesome.  Black & Read in Arvada is a superb books and music store.

(05:30) Anima looks so amazing, it's almost sad that we'll likely never play it.. No, Jean, don't do it!

(08:00) Pokemon Pinball! Tyler's current high scores... there may be a preference there. Nintendo had humble, and quite different, roots. high scores, All the wizard modes.  It allows you to play a mean game. Alex's parents own a Xenon table.  Read the Notes section.  My hobby: replacing hyphens.

(13:00) The mysterious overlap between RPGs and tactical games.

(14:30) OGRES!

(16:45) Tome of Innaccuracy.

(22:00) This game has loooong battles.

(24:00) Pedras hurt them if they hurt you.

(28:30) This game is deep, man.

(31:45) Decision making.

(34:00) The reward pacing of this game is a little odd.

(37:00) This game is somewhat about minmaxing.  Also, it has a story? History lesson!

(43:00) A brief commentary on whether a game that is narrative-centric should just be a movie.

(44:30) Some discussion about the necessity for rational humans to justify realistic violence within the game's story.  It's a meaty topic that we don't nearly cover.  Also, for some reason it seems easier to do this in a tabletop RPG than in a videogame.

(47:40) Spec Ops: The Line deals with the aforementioned subject through our favorite medium!

(50:40) Apparently not feeling weighty enough this episode, we dip into a discussion about videogames as an art form.  I would ammend our discussion here that videogames may already be art, but be truly transcendent were they to meet the criteria we outline here.

(51:30) Final thoughts about Ogre Battle 64: It's pretty good!

Next week, Super Metroid!  Get read to explore and shoot things (not necessarily in that order).

Morph ball on over to us at

Episode 19: Mario for the Money [Super Mario RPG]

Crazy antics ensue when you press the right button to really whack that guy with a hammer.  This week, we tackle the RPG classic that spawned a whole mess of odd titles featuring the mustachioed plumber.  It's Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars.  Yes, that subtitle is super necessary.

Press A to right before downloading for extra damage!

(02:30) Potato burgers!  They're magically potato.  Also, the current state of lab grown meat.

(05:00) Man of Steel, a movie with Superman!

(08:50) Not corrupt leaders!  Charlemagne was awesome.  I may have talked up Sukarno a bit, but he wasn't terrible.

(14:30) Pandora's Tower for the Wii!  Looks pretty decent.  Couldn't find the review I originally read for it, though.

(15:00) JRPGs and turn-based combat.  Characterization is cool!  We get a bit distracted on other games here.

(23:00) Back to turn-based combat.  Star Ocean is pretty cool.  If you've never played FFX, it's pretty decent.  For the combat system thing, check out the right side of this image I found on Shamus Young's site. Another pretty decent TBC system, Wild Arms!

(28:20) Kind of a tangent, but here's a good description of how it feels to be shot.  On a lighter note, levels of abstraction in games!  Dwarf Fortress!

(31:30) We actually get to the game.  It's Mariorriffic.  Geno and Mallow are... not super setting appropriate.  Geno for Smash, btw.  The timed hits make the combat more engaging than Final Fantasy and the endless battles.

(38:00) The visual style is mostly this the entire game.  Neutrality!

(40:00) The weird design choices Square made with the setting.

(44:00) Better engagement through environmental interaction?  Golden Sun!

(47:20) Do you make up stories for plotless games?  Let us know!

(52:30) SLAP!

Next time on Last Time, it's Bases Loaded.  Batter up!
