Episode 217: Pokemon Puzzle League

You know what's puzzling about Pokémon? When they start shooting a bunch of blocks and playing Tetris instead of using a flamethrower and body slam. Dive into the exciting world of the Puzzle League, where Ash, for some reason, got an invitation to compete. Also Team Rocket, I guess. Choose from the diverse cast of all the gym leaders that appeared in the anime, and enjoy as the spout the same line over and over again.

Episode 145: Smell Ya Later! [Pokémon RBY]

It's not uncommon to want to excel at your chosen field, and maybe even to be the very best. Perhaps you want to catch and train some things in a manner no one has attempted before. Of course, in order to take a true measure of your talent, you might have to travel, and, in fact, search for rivals and tools. Ultimately, though, to prove your mastery, you will have to become formidable with each tool of your trade: portable monstrosities.

Can you just download copies of Pokémon, or are they DRM protected?

Show Notes

(03:30) Suddenly evil!

(05:30) Stop squiddin' around, Stairfax!

(07:45) We didn't start the fire, that guy did.

(10:00) Yes, Kojima, we've all read books.

(12:00) Hmm hmm, hmm hmm hmm.

(13:15) At least one of us is going to play a lot of this game soon.

(17:00) This game is rated very well on a number of scoring systems.

(24:40) Japan is cool with cute.

(25:30) Golduck is such a BAMF, unlike that chubby rat.

(28:30) Why are psychic weak to bugs?  Mind == blown.

(31:30) We all like shorts.

(35:00) Bugs are trash, Aaron.  Maybe he got stuck in a forest.

(38:30) Speaking of trash Pokémon.  Also, can we all agree that Mr. Mime is just super creepy?

(43:00) Golbat dance!

(50:00) No bags of holding.

(57:00) Elite 4 difficulty cliff.  Poor Nuzlockers.

(1:02:00) Platinum and GSC had excellent post game.

(1:05:00) Gotta rank 'em all!

Episode 132: Pokémon WIZARD [Pokémon Pinball RS]

Somehow... it has taken us over 130 episodes to finally play a pinball game.  Perhaps more surprising is that this is only our third Pokémon game.  On a vaguely related note, everyone I know pronounces it "Pókemon", but we were all kids who didn't understand accents at the time.  At any rate, we're going to loop our way through hatching, catching, evolving... Really, everything in this game comes down to shooting 1 of 4 loops.  Also, occasionally annoying a Pelipper enough to cause it to eat you.

2 ramp shots is enough to activate the download, but the 3rd gives you a chance for the stinger.

Show Notes

(02:30) Sunk cost fallacy and the Nigerian prince scam.

(03:30) Stupid Sweeper bonus.

(05:30) Yoshi's Wooly World is really good!  Play it!

(15:30) 7DTD tales.  The other players decided to ignore existing buildings and made a death spire.

(24:00) Getting into the game proper.  There are a lot of problems that mar this otherwise promising game.

(44:00) Pinball, Force style.

Episode 120: 3 Damage For 1 Red [Pokemon Trading Card Game]

A beloved favorite of all the hosts, how does this week's game hold up? More importantly, how good were the mechanics of the original Pokemon TCG? Follow us through gym battles and meetings with deformed monstrosities while we attempt to become Pokemon (TCG) champion!

(01:25) Tool Time with Tyler.  Also, Splatoon is more awesome than it was!

(12:00) Zach's Heroes of the Storm tales!  Speaking of MOBAs, he might have some videos of his shenanigans on League soon.

(16:40) Geremy lauds Persona 3.  It's great!

(25:30) We tackle the actual game!  Thankfully, the current rules are much more convoluted than they used to be.  Our critique basically comes down to excessively simple mechanics and a limited card pool.

(39:45) Conversation about PTCG digivolve into rankings!  Erinaceomorph digivolve to Sonic for the Master System!  That one digivolve into Sonic 2 for the Master System, I guess?  Star Wars digi-unevolve to Super Empire Strikes Back!

Episode 33: Click click click Instead of Pew pew pew [Pokemon Snap]

It's our first rail shooter, and it's not even a shooter.  Join us on an adventure through a suspiciously multi-environed island as we take pictures of everyone's favorite collectible monsters.  Solve puzzles, see wonders, and pester some Pokemon!

Our download is almost as elusive as Mew!

(01:00)  Video Games Taco is a podcast about some stuff done by some ladies affiliated with some other podcast.

(03:00) Our recent gaming endeavors. Pokemon Pinball: Ruby and Sapphire is remarkably relevant.  The Steam box is new, so we talk about it.  ShinTen is apparently a damn long game.

(05:00) We (mostly Zach) ramble a bit about choices in games.

(12:00) XCOM is still awesome, as is Odin Sphere.

(13:30) Animal Crossing burnout happens quickly.

(17:00) Oh, snap! We discuss our first Pokexperiences.  The card game is super broken.

(21:00) We talk about how the game is scored.

(25:00) This game used to let you print out the pictures you took.  Apparently you can post them from the VC, too.

(26:30) Progression in this game happens by solving obvious, yet strangely satisfying, puzzles.  Most of them result in evolution.  The individual levels are pretty nicely designed and super replayable.  Pikachu rides things.

(29:30) Bulbapedia is like crack for Pokefans.

(34:00) Gluing Pokemon together is a thing.  There's one that's just a sword that becomes two swords.  Geremy likes the way Slowbro gets in the game.

(38:00) Just the right length, apparently.

(41:00) How to improve this game: make it Pixelmon.  Also, make it on the Wii U.

(44:00) There are some silly powered Pokemon.

(45:45) This is mentioned.  Tangentially related to that.
