Puzzle

Episode 222: Donkey Kong Jr. and Donkey Kong 3

Sometimes, the world just needs an exterminator. Definitely, the world needs fewer wasps, and no moving slime ropes. Explore the epic saga of the Donkeys Kong with us, and experience the travails imposed upon the majestic apes by various handymen. Unfortunately, no one involved is competent. Unless exterminating is not Stanley's day job?

Episode 217: Pokemon Puzzle League

You know what's puzzling about Pokémon? When they start shooting a bunch of blocks and playing Tetris instead of using a flamethrower and body slam. Dive into the exciting world of the Puzzle League, where Ash, for some reason, got an invitation to compete. Also Team Rocket, I guess. Choose from the diverse cast of all the gym leaders that appeared in the anime, and enjoy as the spout the same line over and over again.

Episode 169: Monkeys are Jerks [Donkey Kong GB]

Giant monkeys throwing barrels have been staples of video games forever, and now you can solve puzzles while fighting them!  Well, they're probably only native to this franchise (and some obscure ripoffs?!), but there's definitely a couple in here.  Also, jumping off of your hands is more effective than from your feet, which is novel.  We'll have to test that some time.

Barrels of downloads.

(03:30) Sorry about the Pyschonauts ending again.  Also, the lost episode.

(05:00) Triggered.

(09:50) Apparently wishes come true?

(12:30) All those Bidoofs and the Shuckster.

(17:00) Some Poke-generational comparison.

(20:00) Apparently they're doing more of them?

(23:30) Pokémon plays Twitch.  It was pretty impressive.

(27:00) Puzzle monkeys!

(34:00) Mechanic hodgepodge.

(40:00) On the ladder?

Episode 143: Hip Hip, Zoombinis! [Zoombinis]

Much like a pack of misshapen lemmings, these little guys will bugger on through with any commands you give them so long as it appears that you're solving a puzzle. Make some pizzas, fire some mud balls, and generally have a great time making it to your new home.

You can only download two items with file types matching a hidden rule.

(07:00) The unfortunately poor consensus on the writing in FE: Birthright.

(14:30) Apparently Fire Emblem is too hard and that's definitely the reason they're not getting new followers.

(20:00) The Dark Knight ability we're talking about is Dark Nebula.  I accidentally wiped my entire party the first time I used it.

(25:30) Bards and Mime Bombs!

(27:00) Yes, we're only just now discovering Dresden Codak.  Yes, it's amazering.

Episode 112: Wasting Time With A Brick [Alleyway and Baseball (GB)]

Like the games this week themselves, discussion about them is fairly brief.  Instead, we talk about epic boss battles, Fire Emblem, and (gasp) League.  There's plenty of amusement to be had regardless, so join us on a magical adventure of whimsy!  And grayscale.

New game: Baseball, but you have to break through the blocks at the end of the park to actually score a homerun.

(05:30) Sacred Stone(r)s!

(18:00) Boss fights‽

(28:00) Baseball.  It feels like we've talked about this before.

(30:00) Alleyway may be a Breakout clone, but it's better than the original.  It lacks good music during the levels, though.

(39:45) Something's... rank in here.   Maybe some Fallout from dinner?  I... can't work Mario Tennis into a sentence, but it might be smelly.  Ending the list this week is Bonk's Adventure.

Episode 79: Only You Can Prevent Building Fires [Ignition Factor]

Like a mighty Squirtle squad, we now rush to extinguish fires! Actually, though, there's very little fire fighting in this game, and a lot of rescuing people who refuse to leave a burning building. Gear up and get ready to ax some tough questions. And by questions, I mean doors.

No!  I won't leave until you rescue Download!

Show Notes

(00:45) Puttin' out fires on Mt. Chi-Chi's Dad's House.  Ox-King?  Why is he called that?

(01:15) He's drinking your arm!

(02:30) Pretty sure this is the Let's Play Geremy mentioned.  It's pretty hilarious.

(04:30) Juri rocks!

(08:30) That X-Men game Zach mentioned might possibly be the one Tyler couldn't remember.

(10:30) Apollo Justice is pretty good, as is Azran Legacy.  Also, the crossover is in the U.S. now!

(13:30) Zach's been playing Civ 5, which is pretty great.

(22:00) P.T.!

(25:20) Five Nights at Freddy's is pretty creepy.

(26:20) Damned if we own, damned if we play it.

(28:45) Run over by a segway.

(29:30) Get paid to save: Ignition Factor!

(34:00) Putting out fires and starting them... with your body!

(44:30) The penalty for losing is very annoying.

Episode 77: Puzzle WIZARDS [Solomon's Key]

The best wizards use fireballs, and Dana's definitely got those. Mostly, though, he can defy the precept of conservation of matter to create and destroy blocks! It's surprisingly useful. Too bad there are SO MANY ENEMIES.  That, and the fairies aren't nearly as useful as they are in Zelda.

Our download's no fairy, but it is ethereal

(17:30) You know how Mana Khemia is awesome?  The sequel sucks.  Don't play it.

(19:30) Conversely, Grandia II is pretty good.

(25:00) Inducing panic in players.  We discuss audio cues and countdown timers.

(30:00) Turns out there's no Link between these games.  Tyler got the name wrong.

(34:00) Replaying puzzle games.

(36:00) Beating/starting levels is a bit disappointing.  The music's pretty good, though.

(41:00) Speaking of constantly repeated puzzles...  By the way, Resident Evil, collecting a key and opening a door with it is not a puzzle.

Episode 50: We Apologize for the Audio Quality... And Also the Game Quality [Prince of Persia]

This week, we play our first rotoscoped game.  A daring adventure through dungeons and against undead, sure to excite!  Now, if only the controls weren't so obtuse.  At least we have Ed with us this episode to help make the game somewhat bearable.

Also, there are a lot of bump noises on this one because we had Ed on our makeshift mic stand that Alex rigged up for our Animal Crossing episode.  That stand is actually a "bottle of alcohol and shot glass" holder, so it's not super steady.  Sorry 'bout that.

You can't download halfway through taking a step.

(00:50) We introduce Ed, while Tyler, who blames a temporal anomaly, forgot to introduce himself.

(03:00) Ed talks about Wolf Among Us.

(07:00) We talk about Pokémon for a while, because it's us.

(18:00) Some LoL talk.  (Editors Note: Still us.)

(21:30) SCP, guys.  It's pretty distracting, and not as useful for connecting to other computers as one would think.

(24:00) Fire Emblem: Awakening shipping.

(30:00) Story of the most recent Eve catastrophe.

(45:00) We start off this week's game with it's mechanics.

(49:00) Sands of Time!

(53:30) This game was going to be an Apple exclusive.  Yes, early Apple computers were top tier gaming machines.

(55:30) Prince of Persia is pretty bad.  Pretty unanimous "skip."
