Mario

Episode 234: Yoshi's Island

Oh no!  Baby Mario has fallen from his stork, and can't get up!  It's up to a team of egg throwing dinosaurs to escort this fresh human right out of his own egg back home!  But the evil forces of Magikoopa and Baby Bowser stand in their way.  Not to mention a raven on the moon!  Can our dinosaur friends get Mario home safely?  Or will Luigi have to become the hero we deserve?  Listen and find out!

Episode 201: Mario 64 DS

What do you get when you try to control a game originally meant for an analog stick with a d-pad?  Basically the same game, but somehow a lot worse.  Maybe it's because the whole thing smells oddly of garlic; Wario is just too well rendered in this game.  Join us as we hop, skip, and constipatedly hover over the familiar environs of Peach's Castle's magic paintings.

Episode 109: In the Days Before the Mushroom Kingdom [Donkey Kong and Mario Bros.]

A POW block would have been extremely useful in dealing with the ENDLESS BARREL RAMPAGE of one Donkey Kong senior.  Additionally, death hammers would have been useful in clearing out Brooklyn's sewers once the brothers Mario found that homicidal turtles and crabs had infested.  I'm surprised there were no rats, though...  They eventually got Mouser, so that almost counts.  Join us on a trip back to some of the red-hatted plumber's first games!

Episode 19: Mario for the Money [Super Mario RPG]

Crazy antics ensue when you press the right button to really whack that guy with a hammer.  This week, we tackle the RPG classic that spawned a whole mess of odd titles featuring the mustachioed plumber.  It's Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars.  Yes, that subtitle is super necessary.

(23:00) Back to turn-based combat.  Star Ocean is pretty cool.  If you've never played FFX, it's pretty decent.  For the combat system thing, check out the right side of this image I found on Shamus Young's site. Another pretty decent TBC system, Wild Arms!

(28:20) Kind of a tangent, but here's a good description of how it feels to be shot.  On a lighter note, levels of abstraction in games!  Dwarf Fortress!

(31:30) We actually get to the game.  It's Mariorriffic.  Geno and Mallow are... not super setting appropriate.  Geno for Smash, btw.  The timed hits make the combat more engaging than Final Fantasy and the endless battles.

(38:00) The visual style is mostly this the entire game.  Neutrality!

Episode 7: Do the Mario! [Super Mario Bros.]

Coins and noings!  It's another fantastic episode, this time focusing on the indestructible demigod of videogames.  Mario's debut is certainly a classic, but, as is my solemn opinion, the classics are not necessarily good.  Does it hold up?  Do a plumber's routine duties involve jumping on turtles?
