Episode 87: Wake Up! [Link's Awakening]

The chain chomps and goombas are invading! Despite that, we're actually playing a Zelda game. In fact, it's the first that gives you an apparently mystical and well guarded secret in the LoZ universe: the power to jump! Travel with us as Link discovers an island of NPCs worth having dialogue boxes and the first of many trading sequences.

The download, 'tis but a dream.

(38:00) Metroid II could have had better music.  I shouldn't feel like I'm in Subrosia in a Metroid game.  Or maybe I should?  It looks good, though.

Episode 85: Faster, Faster, C'mon, Faster! [Sonic Chaos]

Gotta go fast! Like, 800 km/h! That's pretty fast, kids! Apparently, our blue erinaceomorph friend is back again with springy tiles and rocket boards to go at least that fast. Somehow, Tails can keep up with him, which is pretty impressive. Go collect those emeralds or Eggman will get the last laugh (while cursing the fact that he has to get all those raw materials for building more robots again).

Our download clocks in at Mach 1, which is only 150% the speed Sonic can go in this game.

(34:45) Walrus Boss!  Also, if you like the "boss music" it plays, it's Break-A-Leg by RoccoW.  Also, the Fireman game Tyler mentioned.

(40:30) The special weapons seem more useful in this game than any other Mega Man.  Also, the super awesome Mirror Buster.

It only took us more than 80 episodes to get around to it, but it's our first foray into the fabulous fun time that is the Game Boy! Because everyone's played Tetris (not to mention that it's been talked to death), we're starting off with a trip to Sarasaland, best known for its Super Ball exports. Wait... what's that over there? Episode 82: Fightin' Ufoes [Galaga and Asteroids]

Once again tackling two arcade titles, we now venture into space!  Apparently, all ships in videogame space are triangular to improve their aerodynamics.  While that doesn't help you fly through space, maybe it lets people hear you scream better?  I suppose if your exhaust is funneled behind you...  At any rate, come break rocks into smaller rocks and shoot endless hordes of space bugs with us!

(01:30) For the interested, 8-bit Crazy Train and 8-bit Ghostbusters.

(02:10) Not that it's a surprise, but the Super Sm4sh demo is fun, and the full version comes out tomorrow as of this post.  Hadouken!  It's a bit awkward on the 3DS, leaving us to think the Wii U is the better platform for it.

(06:50) Hyrule Warriors is out, apparently.

(9:30) Mojang has been sold for 2.5 billion U.S.D..  Fear the oncoming Minecraft 2.  Speaking of which, Minetest is the opensource C++ clone.

Episode 81: No Ninja, No Ninja, No [Legend of Kage]

Super jumping ninjas are a lot less cool when they die in one hit.  Or when they can't change their jump arc because of the committed relationship.  Or when their sword arts don't have lightning effects.  They're still ninjas, though, which is pretty awesome.

Our download can cling to trees.

(08:00) Mole people have great potential!  They'll dig their way to the heavens!  Who the hell do you think they are?!

(09:00) Payday 2 did a reward balance.

(12:40) Phoenix Wright has some weird opponents.

(13:45) Undead & Undressed, the game about undressing vampires in broad daylight to kill them.

(15:10) Destiny!  It's a game, apparently!

(17:10) The LoL lore reboot is a bit disappointing.

(21:30) Fallout: Equestria!  Apparently both a tabletop RPG and a huge fanfic base.

(31:00) Gone Home seems pretty cool.  Still.

(34:40) Magic Power Rangers?

(37:30) I Am The One Who Knocks is waaay easier than Full Measure.

Episode 80: Elevators As a Lethal Weapon [Elevator Action]

Super spies are cool, and so are elevators! Somehow, though, these concepts are not peanut butter and chocolate, for they blend somewhat confusingly. You can, however, crush your foes, which is amusing. You'd really think this guy would have a better escape plan than "take the elevator".

The mission, should you choose to accept it, is to download this episode.

Show Notes

(01:30) Sailor Moon, the best hero!

(07:30) Back to the League.

(11:30) The Street Pass add-on games for the 3DS are pretty awesome.  Sadly, no one carries their 3DS on them.

(15:20) Super Sm4sh Bros. is out soon.  By the time of publishing this, the demo is available for everyone!

(23:00) DoS: Hitting a server so much that it can't serve requests reliably.  DDoS: Doing that with a ton of computers.  Lesson: The secret to being a hacker is to be rich!

(25:00) There's both Galactic Civilization III and Sid Meier's Civilization: Beyond Earth.

(27:20) Duck, D-Jump, Dive, D-shoot-the-enemy-spies, and Duck!

(31:00) Consensus: It's a little boring.  Some powerups or different enemy types would help this immensely.

(37:00) Gone Home sounds pretty cool.  Also, The Walking Dead is fun.

Episode 79: Only You Can Prevent Building Fires [Ignition Factor]

Like a mighty Squirtle squad, we now rush to extinguish fires! Actually, though, there's very little fire fighting in this game, and a lot of rescuing people who refuse to leave a burning building. Gear up and get ready to ax some tough questions. And by questions, I mean doors.

No!  I won't leave until you rescue Download!

Show Notes

(00:45) Puttin' out fires on Mt. Chi-Chi's Dad's House.  Ox-King?  Why is he called that?

(01:15) He's drinking your arm!

(02:30) Pretty sure this is the Let's Play Geremy mentioned.  It's pretty hilarious.

(04:30) Juri rocks!

(08:30) That X-Men game Zach mentioned might possibly be the one Tyler couldn't remember.

(10:30) Apollo Justice is pretty good, as is Azran Legacy.  Also, the crossover is in the U.S. now!

(13:30) Zach's been playing Civ 5, which is pretty great.

(22:00) P.T.!

(25:20) Five Nights at Freddy's is pretty creepy.

Episode 77: Puzzle WIZARDS [Solomon's Key]

The best wizards use fireballs, and Dana's definitely got those. Mostly, though, he can defy the precept of conservation of matter to create and destroy blocks! It's surprisingly useful. Too bad there are SO MANY ENEMIES.  That, and the fairies aren't nearly as useful as they are in Zelda.

Our download's no fairy, but it is ethereal

(17:30) You know how Mana Khemia is awesome?  The sequel sucks.  Don't play it.

(19:30) Conversely, Grandia II is pretty good.

(24:00) Space vandals!

(25:00) Inducing panic in players.  We discuss audio cues and countdown timers.

(30:00) Turns out there's no Link between these games.  Tyler got the name wrong.

(34:00) Replaying puzzle games.

(36:00) Beating/starting levels is a bit disappointing.  The music's pretty good, though.

(41:00) Speaking of constantly repeated puzzles...  By the way, Resident Evil, collecting a key and opening a door with it is not a puzzle.

Some tactical training robots whose purpose is to get people to fight and reinvigorate their fighting spirit... or something... just want to watch the world burn.  Thankfully, vikings are awesome!  Also, there are a lot of fireballs, and that's always cool.

You must escort our download to the exit.

Show Notes

(01:45) Tyler's final thoughts upon beating Mega Man 3.

(05:15) Flay's pretty much.  Nothing can stop his drill!

(06:00) Don't play Mana Khemia 2.  Ulrika is soooo annoying.  Pepperoni's awesome, though.

(09:30) Payday 2 tales and the horrors of carrying bags.  While fun, the game suffers from a lack of things to do if your heist is going well silently.  Maybe some mini-game things to move things along?

Apparently goddesses need rescuing, and Pit's the only cherub man enough to do it.  Unfortunately, he hasn't been taking his vitamins, so he gets beaten up really easily.  Also, he can't fly.  Also, Death is trying to kill him, sometimes from multiple bodies at once.  At least you centurion friends are only locked up in minimum security.

Turns out you can just walk across the other side of the screen to find the download.

Show Notes

(05:30) Upcoming (bad) superhero TV shows.

(11:30) We talk about Payday 2 for a bit.  Moral: it's a really fun co-op game.

(14:30) Fire Emblem Awakening continues to be good, but could have been better.  Awesome leveling may cause the end game to be too easy.

(23:15) Ice Climbers: It's kinda boring!

(24:30) Palutena's intro is borderline creepy.  That's, alright, though, because Robin's awesome.

(29:00) This game has a super high difficulty cliff, but an equally steep downslope.

(32:00) You can totally Pac Man your way to the other side of the screen in this.

(39:00) Fortresses are actually pretty fun.  And nutritious.

(40:20) Thieves.  They suck.

(15:00) Zach finally beat the Elite 4.

(16:45) Zach finally played DOTA 2 and his comparison to League of Legends is not favorable for the former.

(23:00) Lackluster title screens.

(28:00) This game has no logical weaknesses, and 2 DIFFERENT CHAINS!  Seriously, boss weakness designers, you had one job!

(30:00) The introduction of Castlevania harems.

(31:20) The stages are a step up from MM2 in terms of theme.

(33:15) A new staple for the series: sliding!

(35:00) Proto Man, a testament to Dr. Light's creative names!

(38:30) The Doc Robot, your worst nightmare.

(43:00) Final thoughts: generally negative; it's got hardware problems, and isn't super consistent.

Travel with us back to the magical land of the early 1980s.  Gaze upon the flocks of people standing at arcade machines.  See there!  A yellow disc is consuming small white pellets while being pursued by specters.  And there!  A... smurf?  Is inflating dragons until they explode?  I don't even...  Well, at least one of these was an arcade classic; we'll let you decided which.

The trick to getting the download is to wait until the last second to inflate the power pellet.

Episode 72: Beating Up Wizards For Lunch Money [Final Fantasy II]

Hark, and listen, for I shall tall ye a fantastic tale. You see, long ago, in the land of Baron, the king was a dick. Also, there was this guy who commanded their sweet airship force who was less of a dick, then redeemed himself. There were some other people, too, who could throw fireballs and stuff, but it's mostly about airship dude. He had great hair!

(07:30) League tales.

(12:30) Pretty Guardian Sailor... Those eyes...

(15:30) Final Fantasy: subtitles.

(18:40) Now you, too, can watch text walls!

(23:00) The intro isn't super interesting, largely due to lack of variety in combat.

(30:00) Rydia!

(31:00) Interesting mechanics: ranged weapon ammunition, hand preference, row assignments.

(33:00) As a side note, the DS intro makes this game look much better.

(36:00) The Antlion.  This thing.  Signposting problems.

(39:00) Lack of descriptions on items and rotation characters make progress somewhat lackluster.  Not to mention there's some overlap between characters.

(21:30) Orion: Dino Horde.  I can't recommend it, but it's amusing.

(22:45) Natural Selection 2 is pretty great, but relies on someone on your team not being a dick, which is the downfall of online gaming.

(28:30) Bomberman!  It's a bit bland due to lack of variation, sadly.

(32:00) Powerup rundown.

Episode 70: You're in the Anime Army Now [Shock Troopers]

Sadly, I think the best possible description of this game comes from Wikipedia's story summary:

The Bloody Scorpions have kidnapped a scientist and his granddaughter Cecilia in order to gain the powerful drug, Alpha-301, which converts normal people into superhuman soldiers. A special team must fight through their ranks in order to get to their leader and save the scientist's granddaughter and the world.

So, grab your guns and shoot only on cardinals and diagonals, because that's how this squad does it, kid!

Our download's special power is unfortunately similar to that other guy's.

(03:20) Steam sale chronicles!

(04:30) Football, apparently.  Distinct from gridiron.

(05:00) Zach talks about Dawn of War.

(14:00) Game Dev Tycoon!  Sadly, CarPG was not released this year.  Also, the morality of the game is a bit naive.

(22:30) Crusader Kings II and Geremy's adventures as Ned Stark.

(28:30) Naruto Adjectives is probably not worth the full price, but it's pretty good.

(30:30) Rogue Legacy.  It's not this generation's Ghosts n' Goblins.

(36:20) The Neo Geo.  It was absurdly expensive for a home console.  Here's this week's game; here are some others that came out before this.  In retrospect, it doesn't look bad for the time.

(42:00) Poor hit feedback for bosses, but pretty good otherwise.  The controls feel weird.  It's pretty mediocre, sadly.  Summary: go play Geometry Wars.

Episode 69: Robocowboys, Yeehaw! [Wild Guns]

Like every good sci-fi story that takes a look at colonizing other planets (especially dust ol' Mars), the first thing society does is revert back to Old West style land grabs, claim jumpers, and space-rail barons. When the rich decide to use their automated army and a horde of goons to oppress the poor spaceminers, though, it's up to two spacegunslinging space cowboys to take down the entire army armed with nothing but ion lassos and their inexplicably modular guns. Also, some cleavage doesn't hurt.

See you next time, Space Download.

(01:00) Last Time, your FTL podcast.

(03:00) Semi-spoiler: Zach's thoughts on SC2's story.

(04:10) Crusader Kings II is an awesome game for people who don't afraid of spies!  Also, it has a Game of Thrones mod.  I'm sad there are no Oberon/Oberyn mashups.

(09:30) Strike Vector: only vaguely similar to FreeSpace 2, and way harder.

(11:00) Not quite the shipping Geremy was talking about, but I will accept Sailor Venus fighting the Green Ranger to the death on a Street Fighter III stage.  This video is so oddly specific, I have no idea how it exists.  Thanks, M.U.G.E.N.!

(11:30) DEFCON is pretty great, if simple, though it might be Tyler's lack of skill at RTS speaking here.

(14:30) Pot jokes!

(15:00) Talkin' about our LCS league.

(17:30) A rundown of the basic mechanics of Wild Guns.  Points do stuff (100,000 is another life).  Annie loves hitting on the dudes.

(24:00) Apparently, this game is just Cowboy Bebop.  Obviously.

(32:00) Final thoughts: worth a play if it's ever on sale for under $5.

Episode 68: Duh Duh Duh Duuuh! You Got the Podcast! [The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past]

Join us on an epic adventure to save the princess and find a bunch of neat tools in the process! Find the MacGuffins, talk to fairies in caves, and, most importantly, use the Pegasus Boots to go everywhere because walking's for chumps. Also, don't forget your vanity mirror. It's dangerous to go alone!

This dungeon's item is a download!

(00:50) Thanks, Ranger Danger!

(03:15) Pikmin 3 is a bit short, but pretty great.

(06:50) Zach finally beat FTL.

(42:00) Comparing this game to Skyrim.
