Episode 194: He is Turok [Turok]

He is Turok, and I am very late with this episode.  I'm sorry, folks!  I don't have a good excuse other than laziness and being tired, but here we are... finally.  Enjoy some dinos!

The world has always been protected.  Guarded against dinosaurs, aliens, and random crusaders I guess.  We are defended... by (the?) Turok.  He's adept at running way fast all the time and also shooting dudes, which are, I suppose, the only real qualifications you really need.

Downloadosaurs are the most dangerous thing about this game.

Show Noes

(02:40) Ninjak seems like a pretty cool maybe British guy.

(05:00) While it looks like a joyful frolic, Tyler recommends everyone ignore Angvik.

(09:00) Downwell is a ton of fun if you're looking an arcadey game.

(13:00) Yooka-Laylee!  It's fun.

(14:45) PlunkBatthe random death simulator!

(33:00) Basically some cannons on a mountain.  Basically.

(46:30) Tenchi time!

(50:00) Turok, finally.

(1:08:00) Where do dinosaurs rank?

Episode 186: As Exciting As A Post Office [Postal 2]

When everyone around you is a terrible person, sometimes the only option is to respond in kind.  Or patiently wait in line, but that takes forever.  In a game whose tagline was ""Remember, it's only as violent as you are!", it's really only as violent as you are patient.  Seeming to take most of its cues from the, at the time, much more controversial "ban all video games" political scene, this game attempts to poke fun at people whose morals need to be applied to everyone but themselves and...  Well, that's it, really.  Everyone else is collateral.  Have fun!(?)

Downloads are probably more effective silencers than cats.

Show Notes

(03:15) Sm4sh DLC was apparently a bit cheaper than Tyler remembered.

(06:30) The Switch Pro controller looks like a 360 controller with a better D-pad, but less ergonomic styling.

(16:45) Because at least one of us keeps forgetting, Cross Ange is the show about scantily clad women fighting dragons with mechs, and the cast makes an appearance in Super Robot Wars V.

(25:00) PERSONA!  Is having a ranged weapon better than an Evoker?

(41:30) Brief gender politics and BOTW.  Since we mention it, Aaron Diaz (most recently of Dresden Codak), sketched up a nifty Zelda idea where the eponymous princess is a techno-mage a few years back.

(51:30) Getting around to Postal.

(1:02:00) Rankings!  Hint: it's bad.

Episode 136: かげふみ (Kagefumi) [Thief]

A far better thief than our hapless Windfish hero, Garrett finds his way through the shadows with peerless skill. Somehow, though, zombies can still hear you. Thankfully, standard zombie avoidance strategies apply. Those Hammerites still manage to muck things up, but the power of quicksave shall see you through!

Now featuring infinitely more Kevins.

You can douse the download with water arrows.

Show Notes

(01:30) Introducing Kevin.

(09:30) Geremy recounts a heroic snack trip while waiting to see Lazer Team.

(14:40) Freedom Planet is pretty fun and fixes a few of the problems old Sonic games had.

(15:20) Pony Island is... weird.  We highly recommend that you go in blind.  Not the weirdest game ever, but it defies some expectations.  Games like that are starting to get popular again, it seems.

(21:00) Andre Felipe Felipe's novel boxing strategy.

(25:00) If you like atmospheric platformers, try Ori.  If you like punching stuff while exploring, Guacamelee!

(30:00) Need more TBS?  Consider Pox Nora; just don't play online without practice.

(41:00) Shadows and water.  9/10.

(52:00) A better light/dark side mechanic.

(1:02:00) Speaking of steampunk fantasy.  Also, Mark of the Ninja is still great, guys!

(1:04:30) Which spot will this game steal?

Episode 111: Murder Golf [Halo: Combat Evolved]

Fight the Covenant and defend Earth!  Well, all life in the galaxy, really.  At any rate, we've got a wide arsenal and a lot of aliens to shoot.  Also, a lot of other not-marine cyborgs, which is arguably more fun.  Pewpew!

Sticky or bouncy, our download still explodes.

Show Notes

(00:50)  The U.S. military does, in fact, have a giant death pit stadium and a summoner.

(05:55) ZeRo's FG challenge!

(08:00) Tyler makes the mistake of asking Zach how DW8: Empires works.

(13:30) We dive right into Halo.  Turns out we have a LOT to say about this game.

(17:45) Recharging health and 2 weapon combat: Halo started a trend, wethinks.

(21:30) Halo's got a variety of weapons, all of which feel like they have a role.

(29:00) Enemy parade!

(43:00) Vehicles and general locomotion.

(46:30) Single player campaign.  The scope isn't super great, but it's a solid shooter the whole way through with a more than decent excuse plot.  It culminates really well!

Episode 105: Die Hard in an Underground Secret Science Laboaratory [Half-Life]

This week, we take a look at a fairly well regarded shooter lauded for its cinematic storytelling... and then proceed to harangue it for exactly that reason.  Dive into the depths of Black Mesa with us and find out what makes Gordon the Freeman.

The right download in the wrong place can make all the podcasts in the world.

Show Notes

(01:40) Seriously, this lasted less than a week.

(06:30) If you like Mega Man, check out Azure Striker Gunvolt and Might No. 9!  I'd be surprised if you hadn't heard of them, though.

(08:30) Falling in London is fun!  So is the new Mario Kart DLC.

(16:00) David Tennant as Not-The-Riddler.

(16:45) Geremy's first thoughts on Chroma Squad.

(23:00) Somehow, Zach's the first of us to play Republic Commando, which is now a decade old.

(31:00) A discussion of cinematic storytelling in video games through Half-Life.  Apparently this game is Die Hard without Yuletide festivities.

(44:30) Presentation through set pieces seems to be this game's main strength.

(47:00) First person platforming is always weird, and this game doesn't pull it off super well.

(48:30) Exploration as a counterpoint to action and why the combat could have benefited from being more intense.

(1:02:00) More rankings!  Kid Icarus is a pretty cool guy doesn't angel of anything.  Surprisingly, you gain more ground in that than in Gain Ground.  Solomon's Key gets slotted as well!

Episode 96: Doom Song... Oh, Wait, Star Wars [Star Wars: Dark Forces]

This week, Star Wars!  Surprisingly, no Bothans died for the Death Star plans in this.  We talk a lot about what's now officially "Star Wars" since the Disney acquisition, which inevitably leads to Gundam, because space.  Also, blaster rifles!

Time for some fancy downloading!

Show Notes

(01:30) Man, John Williams has done everything.  Also, awakenings!

(03:00) Spoilers for Citizen Kane.  Yup.

(05:00) So, Affected.

(06:30) Microsoft's "not an Oculus" (working name).  Related: PS3 design decisions.

(15:00) The Galaxy Gun!

(16:30) Screencheat?

(20:30) Minovsky Particles have their own trope page.

(26:00) Doom Wars!

(27:00) Big Star Wars fans have way too much time.

(38:00) This game sounds so interesting; if only it was playable.  Tutorials continue to be a thing older games kinda needed.

Episode 55: Perfect Episode Title [Perfect Dark]

Deadly agents, deadly aliens, deadly weapons, killer music, Elvis; this game has it all.  Except that it was made in an era where dual-analog controllers weren't common.  And it doesn't have a plot.  Except when it does.  Where's the president again?

The Farsight can find our download through the wall of the Internet.

(01:00) The dangers of running a podcast when LoL exists.

(02:00) We talk about Catherine for a bit.  Not to spoil the ending too much, but this one's crazy.  It's a bit odd...

(06:00) Tyler talks about Catherine's karma mechanics, similar to some other game, that happens to be free.

(08:20) WindForge is pretty cool, but hard to look at.  The review, sadly, says it all.

(11:00) Because games, Zach talk about Titanfall.  Our general impression is positive.

(14:00) Geremy never played Goldeneye.  This is blasphemy for our generation.  For those who don't know, this week's game is the spiritual successor to it.

(17:30) Perfect Dark's story.  We don't even.

(21:00) Every weapon has an alternate fire.  Some are... less useful.

(23:40) The proper way to hold an N64 controller.

(27:30) When Good AI goes bad.

(30:45) Goldeneye and Perfect Dark as the progenitors of console-based multiplayer shooters.

(32:00) Our favorite guns, including the Reaper, Super Dragon, and Laptop Gun.

(34:30) Counter-op!

(41:00) That Frontalot song Geremy mentioned.

Episode 45: Aw, Man, We Ran Out of Wolf Jokes [Operation Wolf]

Grenade chickens.  Need we say more?  Yes?  Well... light guns were a thing, right?  Operation... Wolf!

Reload or Download?

(01:15) Buster Wolf!  Skyrim's pretty cool, guys.  Also, badass dragons are rich.

(06:00) Crazy tabletop plans.

(08:00) Introduction to the early history of the camera wars.  Also, Game Fly still exists, apparently.

(09:30) On the nose... villains...  Arkham Origins ended up being mediocre.

(18:30) Only a science major can play LoL!  Knights of Pen and Paper!  Related.

(21:30) ACIV has some... tone issues.  TF2: odd meta.

(25:30)  Starwhal!  Play it!

(29:00) Light gun games!  Also, our fantasy leagues.

(35:00) Peripherals in general.  This is a thing now, and I want it.

(42:00) Operations and wolves associated to them.

Episode 27: Hell is Other People... Turned into Machine Gun Wielding Demon-Marines[Doom II]

Strap yourselves in and pull out your BFGs.  It's Doom II this week.  As we near the end of our sequel month, we talk about our favorite sequels and some other game stuff.  Also, super-shotguns.

You're gonna need a bigger download.

(01:00) We get into it early! Geremy's mouse works again, so more LoL.  Civ difficulties are funny.  Also, he's been farming for paper. Zach's been hitting things.  FTL still rocks.

(07:45) Our favorite sequels.

(12:00) DKC and Doom as ambient games.  Also, difficulty selection!  How would you implement difficulty in a platformer?

(18:00) DMC has an easy mode that you have to unlock.  The L4D2 AI director was pretty spiffy.

(22:30) Since we're rambling about difficulty, how should if be scaled for puzzle games?

(24:40) For the unitiated, the Tower of Hanoi.

(26:40) Honorable mention: Puzzle Quest: Challenge of the Warlords.  Maybe also Puzzle Fighter.

(28:30) A not-so-great sequel.  Doom II!  Might be better...  It lacks enemy and, therefore, strategy variety.  It's basically the same game, but with multiplayer.

(34:30) The music's not as great.  Compare the first level music from Doom with this game's first level music.

(40:00) Old man impressions.  Also, Sailor Moon!

Next week, get your jump on!  It's Super Mario Bros. 2: The Lost Levels and Super Mario Bros. 2!  Yeah, both of them.  We suggest the All-Stars pack for the SNES.

Episode 14: Hell Needs a New HR Department [Doom]

Mars is red not due to its mineral composition, but due to the massive amount of demon blood you've spilled there!  Someone ought to clean that up...  This week, upon Zach's suggestion, we topple a demon dominated Deimos and take the fight right back to them!  There are biomechanical chaingun demons, bull demons, fireball demons, demon possessed soldiers, and... more demons.  There are a lot of them.  Good thing you have a lot of guns.

If you want to download, you're Doomed to have to click this link

(01:00) What we've been playing!  Zach's transgressions...  On a side note, try an elliptical or stationary bike while gaming!

(06:00) Geremy's gone through some demos from the XBLA.  Check out an awesome theme song.  Also, a terrible LotR game.  Also, Age of Booty!  If you're wondering about the comment thread we mentioned, it's on my post on adventure games.

(09:30) Since we're all table top RPG guys, here's some links to Fear the Boot's Dan's Danverse (Epoch of Rysos) and the general site for Skies of Glass.

(12:00) Sabin loves some train...ing.

(15:15) Our first objective and multiplayer FPS games and our feelings on them in general.

(19:20) We finally get to Doom and our first impressions!  I'm not looking at you...

(23:30) Zach was right about it being on the PSX.  Also, we talk briefly about the differences between all the versions we played.

(27:00) Imagery in Doom.  It's actually got a pretty consistent theme and tone, with enemies becoming progressively more organic and the environment becoming more obviously hellish.  Also, lots of exploration in this game.

(33:45) Shareware games.  We don't see a lot of those any more, but their spirit lives on in demos.

(35:00) Doom helping completionist OCD without arbitrary grades.

Next time, it's Ghosts 'n Goblins!  In addition to arcade cabinets and being on the NES, you can find this game in both forms on the Wii Virtual Console.  Join us next week for some crazy javelin throwing adventures and princess/girlfriend rescuing!
