Episode 30: Future Robots Are Cool [Mega Man X]

This time around, we take a look at a classic that Geremy and Tyler won't stop talking about.  Zach dissents!  Really, it's about the same as usual, except it's Mega Man X!  And it's awesome, despite what certain curmudgeons say.

X!  Enter this pod to receive a sweet download!

(01:00) We've been playing videogames like it's an addiction!  On a related note, Cloud 9 is apparently awesome.

(04:20) Kazooie or Tooie?  You decide!  Also, the best 120 star time, distinct from the minimal run we mentioned.

(09:20) Future is cool.  Megami Tensei is crazy sprawling.  We talk about series vs. franchises for a bit.  Tyler tangents about an awesome game in that series for a bit.

(15:00) Camp meters would be amazing, especially for him.

(20:00) Norse mythology, fools!  Also, Mega Man X or something.  It's pretty!

(24:40) Awesome mechanics help make awesome games.  Wall jumping and dashing makes this almost not a Mega Man game.  Maybe some sort of X thing.

(28:00) Button mappings may or may not matter.

(33:00) Zach rants about game limitations and how they shouldn't exist.  The level he's talking about with the mace guys at the beginning is Boomer Kuwanger's.

(43:00) Tyler eats his words and admits to doing buster only runs of X.

(48:00) A bit of a tangent, but sections of games that mess with your normal control scheme: good or bad?

(51:30) Alternative takes on stories.  Also, we mention visual shorthand hinting at potential strategies.

Episode 29: Somebody Call Me a Belmont [Castlevania: Symphony of the Night]

This week, we tread where no man dare to tread.  No man except a vampire!  And most people who own a PSX way back when.  It's a terrible night to not know how to backdash!

Let us download tonight for pleasure.  The bandwidth is still great.

(01:00) A brief alcoholic interlude, followed by what we've been playing.  Geremy and Zach played some SC2.  Nocturne, for the uninitiated, is a game about demons n' stuff.  Wonderful 101 is super weird, but kinda fun!  Bat nipples...  Tyler talks a bit about Thomas Was Alone.

(10:30) In Showdown Effect, katanas are the default.  Also, Burnout: Paradise is a pretty cool game that doesn't afraid of crashing.

(13:15) Videogame treadmill.  It's a thing that needed to be.

(14:10) When to get a new console.  Bungie continues to lend its mighty aid to Microsoft.  The PS2 may have been a thing.

(18:30) Why buy a console over a computer.

(21:40) What game would you play for the rest of ever if you only had one?

(23:00) Castlevania: SotN is pretty sweet.  CD loading roomsAmazing.  Zach and Tyler briefly debate the merits of 2D games and whether they should exist.

(28:15) WHY?!

(29:30) Cross-douken!

(30:30) Just a list of things this game does...

(31:30) What Zach was talking about.  Also, Alucard definitely gets vengeance.  Nooo!  My powerups!

(35:20) Sweet opening music. The rest of that video has the full soundtrack; it's killer.

(39:45) Pointlessness of sub-weapons.  They may help you get it all done.

(43:30) What is a man?  Die you monster!

(45:30) Just text is worth exploring.

(47:30) Play it!  It's worth the price.

Next week, you'll be cool enough to play Mega Man X!

Episode 28: A Piggyback?! He's Supposed to be Dead! [Lost Levels and Mario 2]

It's been a strange week, so here's a strange episode.  You almost didn't get this one!  This week, we did what we've been threatening to do for a while.  No, not that.  That would break our rating.  The other thing!  We recorded a double-game episode!  That other one didn't happen.  To keep up the weirdness, this week's show notes are brought to you by Zachigan, son of Zach.

Our download is not a hard platform to land on.

(0:35) We argue about who is more clever.

(1:14) Geremy lies to you.

(1:34) What we've been playing.

(3:10) Civilization 5

(5:23) Iterative development vs Normal development

(8:00) EA shot itself in the foot.

(9:50) Geremy is paying KoL to shill for them.

(11:20) We talk about what we think sequels should do.

(14:20) Do you need a story in video games?

(16:20) Debate on greatness

(18:45) Nintendo doesn't do story. Example: Zelda..

(21:11) Tyler goes off topic.  Surprise.

(21:45) We get to the games of the week.

(23:25) Poison mushrooms suck.

(27:00) Game Force!

(32:00) Stuff taken from Mario 2 that made it into later games

(35:45) Evil Masks!

(36:30) Which one did we prefer?

(38:00) Improvements to be made.

(42:00) Sequel month is over :( Geremy is the villain!

Next week: Castlevania: Symphony of the Night.  Let us go out and slay some vampires for pleasure!

Episode 27: Hell is Other People... Turned into Machine Gun Wielding Demon-Marines[Doom II]

Strap yourselves in and pull out your BFGs.  It's Doom II this week.  As we near the end of our sequel month, we talk about our favorite sequels and some other game stuff.  Also, super-shotguns.

You're gonna need a bigger download.

(01:00) We get into it early! Geremy's mouse works again, so more LoL.  Civ difficulties are funny.  Also, he's been farming for paper. Zach's been hitting things.  FTL still rocks.

(07:45) Our favorite sequels.

(12:00) DKC and Doom as ambient games.  Also, difficulty selection!  How would you implement difficulty in a platformer?

(18:00) DMC has an easy mode that you have to unlock.  The L4D2 AI director was pretty spiffy.

(22:30) Since we're rambling about difficulty, how should if be scaled for puzzle games?

(24:40) For the unitiated, the Tower of Hanoi.

(26:40) Honorable mention: Puzzle Quest: Challenge of the Warlords.  Maybe also Puzzle Fighter.

(28:30) A not-so-great sequel.  Doom II!  Might be better...  It lacks enemy and, therefore, strategy variety.  It's basically the same game, but with multiplayer.

(34:30) The music's not as great.  Compare the first level music from Doom with this game's first level music.

(40:00) Old man impressions.  Also, Sailor Moon!

Next week, get your jump on!  It's Super Mario Bros. 2: The Lost Levels and Super Mario Bros. 2!  Yeah, both of them.  We suggest the All-Stars pack for the SNES.

Episode 26: I'm Feeling a Little Stabby [Zelda II: The Adventure Of Link]

This time, we look at a game that doesn't really make any sense when compared to the rest of the games in the series.  It's Zelda II, the game in which you stab things to death and get items that don't do anything for you other than let you find other things to stab!

Our download is Error!

(1:00) Apartment shenanigans.  Zach's been playing SoD, which looks pretty good.  Walking Dead continues to be good, surprising no one, but pleasing many.  Also, we talk a bit about Save the Date.

(11:40) Apparently, not many people make up stories for games while playing them if one's not present.  Do you?  Let us know!

(14:30) Tibia is an isometric view, 2D, genericly fantasy MMO with use-based skill levels.  You can level in fishing!

(16:30) To Be or Not to Be, the choosable path adventure book based on Hamlet.  Coincidentally, there are about 10^120 possible chess games.

(21:30) We give some post-processing thoughts on Castlevania 2.

(23:30) Zelda II's a pretty cool game that doesn't afraid of resurrecting Ganon.  Overworld maps might be overrated for this game.

(28:30) This game defies most of the Zelda tropes, what with the death holes, lack of puzzles, and unforgiving levels.  Also, it's a bit glitchy.

(33:30) In Bed...

(35:20) Related, Tyler rambled about items and scope of player actions.  This game doesn't really let you do different things, and it's sad.

(42:00) Wrapping up.  You can prolly pass it up.

Episode 25: Dude, Where's my Castle? [Castlevania II Simon's Quest]

We start to dig into the meat of sequel month with a game that forever changed a franchise.  Whip yourselves into shape to explore the most inscrutable logic in a Castelvania game, and embark with us upon Simon's Quest!

I bet you can't find the way to the download without a guide.

Episode 24: Robots That Shoot Up [Mega Man 2]

At the top of a sky scraper (that we never actually see otherwise), a lone hero stands against the mechanized army of a mad man.  The blue bomber returns!  This time, Zach's on board as we take a look at the sequel to the first game we ever reviewed in a semi-public forum, kicking off sequel month.  Really, that's just an invitation for us to finally start playing some slightly newer games.

Mega Man can't do it, but you can shoot up our Download.

(00:30) Can you defeat Air Man?

(02:10) We play games!  Apparently, Tyler jumped the gun mentioning FTL last week.  Here's an articleMega Man X is fantasticRelated to AwakeningThe Movies is an interesting game.  Also, it occurs to me that we've never linked KoL.  Meat!  Fortune Street.  Seriously, guys.

(12:20) Geremy was wrong, Zach was right.  It's Deus Ex you can't play on a jailbroken device.

(17:20) What makes a good sequel?  Non-linear games are pretty cool, but that's not necessarily the way to go.

(26:00) Zach talks about Halo 2, and how it seems like a multiplayer only game.

(27:00) Difficulty levels in MM2!  The bosses are bossy.

(28:30) We talk a bit about the level designs.  Should insta-death ever be a thing.  Let us know!

(30:00) Metal Man and Air Man are really the only well-themed stages.

(32:30) Are boss rushes a valid game design?

(35:10) Stupid platform section.

(37:30) Apparently, he was based on Santa Claus.

(43:00) Why would you listen to Proto Man?!

(46:30) Mega Man II is better.  Also, what we think would have helped this one.

(50:30) Final thoughts.

Next time, whip it.  Whip it... for more hearts!  It's Castlevania II.

It's a terrible night to not talk to us.  Send us some mail at

Episode 23: Show Me Your Moves! [Super Smash Bros.]

We crash, mash, and clash our way into our first game on the N64!  It's Super Smash Bros., the fighting game classic that defied genre tropes and created a rather avid fanbase.  Amidst all the furiously flying fighters, there are glimpses of what was to become of this series.  Let's duke it out and see how far up the pile this one lands!

KO our Download!

(01:30) Geremy's awkward family moments.  Also, Zach might be building bears.

(05:30) What we've been playing.  Alex plays games!  Lots of ACCF recently.  KSP's pretty fun.  Speaking of space, so's FTL1080 is a snowboarding game of some sort.

(14:40) Fortune Street!  I link to a review, but I don't think such a thing can possibly do it justice.  It's pretty cheap on Amazon, so if you have some friends that want to play Monopoly without the suck, the hosts recommend it.

(16:40) Smash Bros.! Surprisingly, it's one of the few crossover game.  Also the brainchild of Masahiro Sakurai.

(21:00) The roster!  The story of Falcon.

(24:00) There are unique target challenges and platform challenges for every character.  It's pretty cool.

(28:30) We talk about Melee for a bit.  It's generally better, to the extent that this game feels like a prototype for it.  It's a pretty good case for sequels.  We later claim it obsoleted this game.

(34:20) Just... why?

(37:20) That shadow eyeball thing from Kirby.

(39:30) People don't like the shotty.

Episode 22: Cruel or Funny? [Super Dodge Ball]

The 80s.  This was the time of men in short shorts on professional sports teams.  It was a time when a man could throw his balls at another man, and no one cared.  Except certain channels of ESPN.  If you can dodge popular culture, you can dodge this joke!

Bet you can't dodge this download!

(02:20) For your petard oriented edification.

(04:40) What we've been up to.  Geremy has an awesome story later, but Tyler's been on some Diddy Kong Racing.

(08:10) Tyler was wrong about the platform, but Conker's been around for a whileSexual dimorphism, by the way, is the tendency for genders in a single species to be physically dissimilar.

(11:50) Geremy had a sweet Dwarf Fortress tale. This is the tutorial Geremey used to learn Dwarf Fortress. It's a little out of date, but it'll teach you the basics.

(23:40) What makes for awesome game titles? We don't know, but we talk about it.  Fuse is a 4 person co-op shooter thing.  Similar to Brute Force in that respect.

(28:10) Super Dodge Ball is a game about men and their balls. Seriously, everyone's seen this, right?

(29:20) Cruelty, and therefore dodgeball, is inherently funny.  Michael grokked that.

(30:40) Seriously, Hamlet as a geek makes so much sense.

(31:15) If you want to see how this game plays, check this out.  It's pretty much perfect.

(34:40) That thing in London? Westminster Abbey.

(40:28) Double Dragon was incredibly hard to jump in.

(43:30) Final thoughts and suggestions for improvement.

Next week, it's the all-start slugfest that reached amazing levels of fanaticism.  It's Super Smash Brothers!

Episode 21: Get Your Brains On [Zombies Ate My Neighbors]

This week we're getting into our backyards and saving totally oblivious neighbors.  It's Zombies Ate My Neighbors!  Grab your super soakers and terribly dated 3D glasses (excluding the Doctor) and shoot some horror themed enemies!

Brains... Downloads...

(02:20) Forza 4's Warthog!

(05:00) 08th MS Team is a pretty decent guy who only afraids of some things.  Freakin' Invincible.

(07:20) WWBP!  Idle diversions are fun!  Fire Emblem Awakening is pretty sweet.

(11:30) Golden league Jigglypuffs!

(16:30) Direct sequels to games that don't normally have them.  I'm looking at you...

(19:30) Platypus Bear!

(21:00) Zombie time.  For reference, Geometry Wars.

(25:50) State of Decay.  It sounds pretty amazing.  It's like a more complicated, but not MMO, DayZ.

(27:30) Not the picture we were talking about, but amusing.

(32:00) Convenience over ammo.  It's a pretty decent mechanic.

(35:20) We mention it being frustrating and hard a couple times.  It's worth noting that it's not really hard, so much as just tedious.

(40:30) Record of Agarest War.  If you like Disgaea, you'll like this.

Next week, Super Dodgeball!

Bold move, Cotton.  Let's see if it works out at

Episode 20: Go Big or Respawn [Bases Loaded]

Take us out to the ball game!  Take us out to the crowd with no animation!  Buy us some surprisingly complex pitching mechanisms and horrible batting.  We don't care if we ever come back!  Bases Loaded is the NES classic about hitting balls with sticks.

It's a home run! Take your walk to the download!

(1:10) Zach's finally made it to SC2 Silver League.  Geremy's playing everything.  This includes Word Realms.  It sounds pretty cool.

(10:45) Sports games!  NFL Blitz is pretty fun, as is NBA Jam.

(15:00) Control schemes!

(19:00) Totally a Dreamcast.

(22:00) Man of Steel!  Kind of a specific marketing campaign.

(25:35) Bases Loaded.  It simulates baseball!  Fielding needs an active player indicator.  Apparently, newer baseball games are better.

(34:00) Final impressions of the game.  It's... not super fun.  Or regular fun, really.

(38:50) Tangent time!  Megatokyo is a pretty decent and incredibly long running story based web comic.  Watch the train go!

(40:00) Simulation and how much is necessary.  Dwarf Fortress is a thing.  Missteps in GTA.

Next week, Zombies Ate My Neighbors for the SNES. Grab your movie supplies for undead bashing!

Episode 19: Mario for the Money [Super Mario RPG]

Crazy antics ensue when you press the right button to really whack that guy with a hammer.  This week, we tackle the RPG classic that spawned a whole mess of odd titles featuring the mustachioed plumber.  It's Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars.  Yes, that subtitle is super necessary.

Press A to right before downloading for extra damage!

(02:30) Potato burgers!  They're magically potato.  Also, the current state of lab grown meat.

(05:00) Man of Steel, a movie with Superman!

(08:50) Not corrupt leaders!  Charlemagne was awesome.  I may have talked up Sukarno a bit, but he wasn't terrible.

(14:30) Pandora's Tower for the Wii!  Looks pretty decent.  Couldn't find the review I originally read for it, though.

(15:00) JRPGs and turn-based combat.  Characterization is cool!  We get a bit distracted on other games here.

(23:00) Back to turn-based combat.  Star Ocean is pretty cool.  If you've never played FFX, it's pretty decent.  For the combat system thing, check out the right side of this image I found on Shamus Young's site. Another pretty decent TBC system, Wild Arms!

(28:20) Kind of a tangent, but here's a good description of how it feels to be shot.  On a lighter note, levels of abstraction in games!  Dwarf Fortress!

(31:30) We actually get to the game.  It's Mariorriffic.  Geno and Mallow are... not super setting appropriate.  Geno for Smash, btw.  The timed hits make the combat more engaging than Final Fantasy and the endless battles.

(38:00) The visual style is mostly this the entire game.  Neutrality!

(40:00) The weird design choices Square made with the setting.

(44:00) Better engagement through environmental interaction?  Golden Sun!

(47:20) Do you make up stories for plotless games?  Let us know!

(52:30) SLAP!

Next time on Last Time, it's Bases Loaded.  Batter up!

Episode 18: Finishing Faster than the Obligatory Falcon Punch Joke [F-Zero]

Faster than a Golden Fox!  More slippery than a Fire Stingray!  Diving farther than a Blue Falcon!  More inane than chasing a Wild Goose!

This week we race on into F-Zero, the futuristic game of driving hover cars around acid trip environments.  Does it cross the finish line?

Falcon pick up this download!

(04:20) What we've been up to.  Zach hasn't played a real game on the 360 for a week!  Burnout 3!
Also, a better game than Yoshi, Yoshi's Island!

(13:30) Kenichi!  It's... cheesecake, really.  I don't know why I'm still watching it.

(14:15) E3!  New Smash, among other things.  In response to the XBox One fiasco, they've apparently done away with some of their restrictions

(17:30) We get sidetracked on Elder Scrolls for a bit.

(22:40) F-Zero!  Finally!  Pretty!(?)  The concept's not bad, but it's a bit bare.

(34:30) Goroh!

Next time on Last Time, it's Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars!  It's on the Wii and Wii U.  Pick it up!

Episode 17: At Least the Art is Pretty [Comix Zone]

If you were a kid in the 90s, you probably wanted to be sucked into your favorite videogame or comic book and be the hero.  You could fight off the ravening hordes, have fun with your favorite characters, and generally be awesome.  Sounds fantastic, right?  Well, they made a game of that.  Unfortunately, I think we've learned that such daydreams are usually best left in the mind of the creator.

Get sucked into our crazy Download world!

(03:10) We talk about sweet games we've been playing.  Sweet!  You can check out the Bronze League Heroes channel and see some SC2 shenanigans.  Chameleons are weak to boomerangs.

(10:30) Tyler's hardcore Minecraft server.  Not really worth mentioning, but as of this episode dropping, it's already gone due to stealth zombies.  Also, I recommend Terranigma.

(12:00) The problems with brawlers.

(14:20) Watch this until about the 16s mark.  Pretty much the entirety of Zach's Deadpool strategy.  Also, CVS2.

(20:20) Comix Zone!  It... has multiple endings?  I feel like we've shot the Liefeld target a couple times, but here's a reminder.

(28:00) Inconsistent themes are inconsistent.  Also, I like wasting your time, and so does this gameLuke Skywalker is a good example of many tropes.  Aerith and Bob!

(35:00) End bosses and disappointment.

(42:00) Why Viewtiful Joe is way better than Comix Zone.

Next week, it's F-Zero.  You can get it on the Wii things and race your Falcon heart out!

Episode 16: Yay Bikes [Excitebike]

It's our oldest game yet, NES launch title Excitebike.  Is a simple game about trying to beat the fastest times on a number of similar dirt bike tracks enough to hold the interest of our Podcasting heroes?  Or will they just talk about a bunch of other stuff instead?  Find out!

Yay Download Link!

(1:06) We havn't recorded an episode in over three weeks!  This leads to an extra long what we've been playing segment.

(2:00) Zach babbles about... something?  You should totally side with either Zach or Tyler in the comments at Lasttimeonvideogames.com.

(3:40) Tyler's gamer confession and spoilers for Final Fantasy III/VI.

(5:30) Then we add on with spoilers about Professor Layton and the Unwound Future.

(8:00) We talk a bit about esports, if watching some pro League of Legends appeals to you, here's the first game of the All Star Game.

(16:45) Simple and casual games.  What makes a game simple?  Why do we play them?

(25:40) Simple games as related to abnegation.  Also we define abnegation.

(28:30) My exciting Excitebike story.  Also the WiiU is really exciting.  This leads to a discussion about the upcoming console generation, and us bitching about the Xbox One like everyone else.

(32:00) We finally talk about Excitebike!  It only took 2/3 of the podcast.

(35:00) We mention Excitebike's sweet victory theme.  We also talk about what could have made this game better, mostly things that later racing games came up with.

(37:00) The wonderful time we live in, with all sorts of cheap videogames and how great games aren't as valuable as they used to be... basically we just complain about how awesome the time we live in is.

Next week, we return to the pretty but flighty console known as the Sega Genesis to play Comix Zone.  Same Videogames time, same videogames channel.

Bonus Episode 1: Mega Man

** DISCLAIMER!!! **

Taking the Fear the Boot route, we're making bonus episodes mostly unedited.  There's still a profanity filter, but other than that, it's dangerous territory.  I'd recommend listening to another episode first if this is your first one.  At this point, I suggest Episode 10.

** END DISCLAIMER!!! **

Geremy and Tyler utilize Zach's absence this week to replay Mega Man and record our talking about it! Tyler was going to Germany the week after, so we needed something to fill in for Excitebike.  Fun times!

Download if you like shooting lemons!

(02:50) How got started on this endeavor.  Spoilers: it didn't start as a podcast.

(04:40) Cool story, bros.

(07:15) Plugging our contact info!

(13:05) Mega Man!  Pew pew!

(18:00) Our first Mega Games.

(26:00) Life is a super valuable commodity.  Also, points!

(28:00) TL;DNL: Mega Man is fun!

Episode 15: Ghosts, Goblins, and Another Plural Noun, Oh My [Ghosts 'n Goblins]

Zombies are everywhere, and it's not a good thing.  Ghosts n' Goblins assaults you with undead on every side, and only you can save your necrophiliac girlfriend while in your boxers!  Come give us a listen as we hurl the javelins, torches, and shields of justice at an arcade classic that truly deserves the description of Nintendo Hard!

Download yourself out of your underwear and into our hearts!

(01:40) What we've been playing and why subjective taste is terrible for criticism.  Doesn't stop us, though!  Front Mission is a game about giant robots taking turns firing at each other and also their pilots.

(06:40) Steam box and its extant competitors.

(15:00) Talking about motion controls.  I totally lied about the GBC having an accelerometer; it was just one Kirby game that had it built into the cartridge.

(16:00) Tutorial levels!  When they're done well, and when they're done poorly.

(19:00) Speaking of tutorials, Mega Man X.  Go watch the Egoraptor Sequelitis on Mega Man!

(20:30) Should tutorials be optional, or completely integrated.  Limbo has a pretty awesome integrated tutorial.  We talk about Killswitch being awful about this, but upon watching the first few minutes, it's not that bad.  I think that game may have had a plot.

(24:20) We actually get to the game.  It just dumps you right in, doesn't it?  The controls aren't as tight as other games of this ilk.

(28:20) Fighting the devil in your underwear!

(31:45) While I generally don't condone the Irate Gamer, the pre-level pan will become a familiar site.

(33:30) We again come back to the difference between challenge and frustration.

(37:00) Check points rock!

(40:30) The game Tyler's talking about is the Universe Project.

(42:10) Dream sequences: terrible idea, lame excuse, or potentially awesome?

Next week, we're actually not doing Excitebike yet.  Zach was (is?) sick, so Geremy and I actually record an episode on Mega Man!  Now you can all be caught up on our legacy!  Mostly...

Thankfully, we've got the Man Man power at
Geremy@lasttimeonvideogames.com,
 Tyler@lasttimeonvideogames.com,

Episode 14: Hell Needs a New HR Department [Doom]

Mars is red not due to its mineral composition, but due to the massive amount of demon blood you've spilled there!  Someone ought to clean that up...  This week, upon Zach's suggestion, we topple a demon dominated Deimos and take the fight right back to them!  There are biomechanical chaingun demons, bull demons, fireball demons, demon possessed soldiers, and... more demons.  There are a lot of them.  Good thing you have a lot of guns.

If you want to download, you're Doomed to have to click this link

(01:00) What we've been playing!  Zach's transgressions...  On a side note, try an elliptical or stationary bike while gaming!

(06:00) Geremy's gone through some demos from the XBLA.  Check out an awesome theme song.  Also, a terrible LotR game.  Also, Age of Booty!  If you're wondering about the comment thread we mentioned, it's on my post on adventure games.

(09:30) Since we're all table top RPG guys, here's some links to Fear the Boot's Dan's Danverse (Epoch of Rysos) and the general site for Skies of Glass.

(12:00) Sabin loves some train...ing.

(15:15) Our first objective and multiplayer FPS games and our feelings on them in general.

(19:20) We finally get to Doom and our first impressions!  I'm not looking at you...

(23:30) Zach was right about it being on the PSX.  Also, we talk briefly about the differences between all the versions we played.

(27:00) Imagery in Doom.  It's actually got a pretty consistent theme and tone, with enemies becoming progressively more organic and the environment becoming more obviously hellish.  Also, lots of exploration in this game.

(33:45) Shareware games.  We don't see a lot of those any more, but their spirit lives on in demos.

(35:00) Doom helping completionist OCD without arbitrary grades.

Next time, it's Ghosts 'n Goblins!  In addition to arcade cabinets and being on the NES, you can find this game in both forms on the Wii Virtual Console.  Join us next week for some crazy javelin throwing adventures and princess/girlfriend rescuing!

Episode 13: "F" is for Fun, but "Ph" is for Phantasy Star [Phantasy Star]

Apparently this game is revered as a classic.  It certainly has classical game aesthetics.  Is it truly worthy of that title, though?  Hack n' slash your way through the futuristic bugbears of the Internet, and hear what we have to say about it!

Download the future here!

(00:30) That one segment we do where we talk about what we've been playing.

(06:40) Setting goals in games and how this relates to intentional obfuscation in games.

(13:20) We finally start talking about Phantasy Star.  In good form, we start with an apology.

(15:30) The plot hook!  Also some setting... I guess?  It's got good art direction!

(18:20) Combat and how you can't direct attacks.

(21:30) The economy of retries.

(24:45) Plot investment, or lack thereof.  This finally loops back around to our obfuscation rambling.

(29:05) Random encounters, outside of combat mechanics.  What constitutes grinding as opposed to normal progression.

(32:30) We talk about what's good in this game.  It's pretty and a bit snarky.

(37:30) The end of Zach's pledge!

Next week, we're bad enough dudes to shoot space zombie-demons.  Doom, the DOS classic, is available on everything, so grab yourself a copy and suit up!

We've got BFGs at

Episode 12: Really, It's Not a Secret To Anyone Anymore [The Legend of Zelda]

In this episode, we take a look at the first in a series very near and dear to at least two of the hosts.  Zach returns, probably to stay, and forms a coalition with Tyler against Geremy about the overall opinion of this game.  Bombs, laser swords, and Octoroks, oh, my!

This Download's not a secret

(01:30) What we've been playing.  It's mostly different stuff!

(6:40) We finally get to Zelda, starting to our entries to the series.

(10:00) The actual game and how it starts.

(12:30) Darknuts! A terrible name for a crazy enemy.

(15:30) Exploration as a focal point in this game and whether the game enables it.

(19:00) Combat in Zelda.  It's... tricky.

(22:15) Death trackers: they sound like they should be awesome.  They're mostly extant instead.

(26:25) How to make Zelda better.  Remembering the existence of the whistle helps.

(32:40) Zelda as the inspiration for sandbox games?

Next week, it's Phantasy Star!  There will be sword slashing and stuff!
